Behind the Blocks: | Swim Coach João Visits #10

I spent some time with my friend Coach Jeff Natalizio at Whittier College Swimming, where he is building a really solid program. What stood out immediately is how intentional everything feels — nothing is random, and every part of the training structure has a clear purpose behind it.

Coming from his experience at Cal, Jeff brings a high-performance mindset into a D3 environment without trying to copy and paste Division I. Instead, he’s adapted what he’s learned into a system that fits the athletes they have, focusing on technical development, consistency, and race execution that actually transfers on meet day.

There’s a strong emphasis on athlete buy-in and understanding the “why” behind training. Swimmers aren’t just going through sets — they’re learning how their training connects to racing, which builds both accountability and race intelligence over time.

What really stood out was how balanced the program is between structure and development. It’s organized, purposeful, and competitive, but still focused on long-term growth. You can see how that combination is starting to shape both the culture and the performance of the group.
